about us

Once Upon A Time…..

A few years ago in a small town in central Alberta, Moonshine Simmentals was born when my grandfather gave me a Black White Face cow to get me started with my cow herd. A few years past and I had a huge interest in black Simmentals. My family raised Fullblood and Red purebred Simmentals, so why not get into the blacks. My motto was “once you go black you never go back”.

I bought my first black Simmental bred heifer from Jack & Shirley Nielsen, Rolling JN Simmentals. And I was hooked.

I have purchased animals from all across Canada trying to improve my herd and find the genetics that I am looking for.

Another chapter in my book opened when I went to Janssen Farms in Iowa to try to find different genetics. It was then I purchased RFS-MS More Than a Memory from the Ruth Family Farm who was a guest consignor at the sale. She has not disappointed me and has become part of our embryo program .

I have participated in a lot of 4-H and Junior shows and have met many friends and contacts along the way. Meeting Pat Ruth and his family in Iowa opened another door for me as he asked me to participate in the US Junior National Show in Missouri in 2011. It was interesting to see how their junior program is run especially because at the time I was a director on the Alberta Young Canadian Simmental board.

These junior shows have also helped me cultivate my passion of grooming. During the fall and in the spring you will find me at one of many shows and sales in Western Canada with a pair of clippers in my hand trying to bring out the best in the animal I’m working on.

I have worked with a number of breeders in all breeds and this has allowed me to travel to different areas. One of the highlights for me would certainly be the Denver Stock Show.

I have expanded my black herd to include some red genetics as well. I understand that not everyone shares the same passion for the black component of the Simmental breed as I do. So I’ve started to look for red genetics to compliment my program. As well I have worked for a number of Angus breeders over the years and have included an Angus division on our farm.

I am still writing the chapters in my book of Moonshine Simmentals. I’m sure there will be many more stories to tell and I’m hoping you will be apart of them.
